How Pingerati works

Ping multiplexing

Pingerati receives updates of pages with Microformat data in, and passes them on to services that are interested in indexing them. With the growth of services that publish and index microformats, there is a need to connect the publishers with the indexers. The 'ping to update' model has worked well with weblogs, but is not ideal for other kinds of pages that may contain microformats.

Sending Pings

The ping format is a straightforward HTTP GET of http://pingerati.net/ping/[url that is updated].

For example, to ping with the URL 'http://microformats.org/blog/', you would fetch the URL http://pingerati.net/ping/microformats.org/blog/.

Specialized Pings

The main Pingerati URL is meant for pages that have a mixture of microformats in, and will be passed on to services that index multiple formats, such as Technorati. There are services that are only interested in pages with a single kind of microformat. For example, EVDB only collates hCalendar events. To accommodate these specialised services, there are a series of subdomains to receive pings for specific microformat types as follows:

SubdomainMicroformatNotes
contacts.pingerati.net/ping/ hCard pages that contain just contacts
events.pingerati.net/ping/ hCalendar pages that contain just events
reviews.pingerati.net/ping/ hReview pages that contain just reviews
listings.pingerati.net/ping/ hListing pages that contain just listings
links.pingerati.net/ping/ xFolk pages that contain just tagged links

For example, to ping with the events-only URL 'http://epeus.blogspot.com', you would fetch the URL http://events.pingerati.net/ping/epeus.blogspot.com.
